It is commonplace to find that one of the main users of GPS watches are runners, hikers and many other sports. However it should also be noted that logging data, navigation and keeping track on those with intellectual disabilities (who are prone to wandering on their own) are also on the market.

It is crucial to understand the general and also advanced features of a GPS watch and comprehend what is on offer. A great tip is to formalize just what your own personal purpose of having a GPS watch. Is it for general exploring or would you prefer a device that logs your heart rate, calories burned and distance? Since GPS watches are used for many intents and purposes, characterizing what your own needs are is especially important.

Basic Features of a Good GPS Watch

It is commonly accepted that the main purpose of having a good GPS watch is for those interested in fitness. Therefore some of the basic features of common GPS watches is that it keeps you on track to achieving your own goals. The fact that they are more reliable than any other form of tracking just goes to show how much they can add to your own personal achievements.

Using a GPS watch for many different types of activities is also something to look out for. You simply do not want to spend money on one that can only be used for one activity which may end up restricting you. It is essential that you look out for a GPS watch that can be set on different features, enabling you to, for example, cycle, run and hike and do many other outdoor activities.

If you are a serious about your fitness then some GPS watches have built in software that enables sending data to your own computer, great for analyzing your results and activity levels. Additionally some good GPS watches can upload data to specific websites, enabling you to keep up-to-date on your own statistics, which is great for modern athletes and those who want to be at the top of their game.

Another feature that some good GPS watches have to offer is being water resistant. This is the ultimate feature for those who are taking part in some kind of water fitness tasks, and if so, it is a complete necessity. It should be noted that not all GPS watches have this feature so this is definitely something to look out for.

Battery life is a considerable factor, especially depending on the type of activities you will take part in. If you are, for example a marathon runner, or a triathlete, you will need long battery life, and there are some GPS watch batteries that last up to 20 hours.

Advanced Features to Look for in Excellent GPS Watches

There are of course some GPS watches on the market that have more advanced and technological enhancements when compared to other brands, and perhaps these advanced features will make all the difference for the user. An example of some of the advanced features are the device that connects to shoes. This will help give more precise results when moving around, sending the data back to the GPS watch. An important aspect to this is that this happens in real time, therefore there will be no delay in receiving results, an excellent advantage to have when gearing up to a special sporting event. By connecting a strap to the shoes, it gives another dimension of usage, since you can still use the watch for indoor activities, such as on the treadmill or stationary bike.

Weather forecasts, temperatures and humidity are just another advanced feature available. For those who seem that this may not be necessary, this is not the case. Users of this function will be able to track their progress in different weather conditions, highlighting there performance in different settings, and seeing how to improve if their conditions are hindering them somehow.
Specialist features also include revisiting your own steps, for instance you get lost in the woods, a simple touch of a button can help you retrace your own steps. Some GPS watches also help you push to the limit, by identifying past data and giving you specific time and activities to help you improve, something that is highly desired among ambitious athletes. Almost as if having your own personal trainer blowing a whistle, with some GPS watches they would vibrate or buzz if you are going to slow of a pace or too fast.

It should also be noted that not all GPS watches are built with fitness in mind. Tracking disabled patients that are in need of constant care is a responsibility that needs to be addressed. These watches have built in features that help track and locate patients enabling carers to keep a constant eye on their patients, something that is of great importance. If you’re an outdoors guy or girl who mostly uses time tracking, altimetry and weather reports, you may not even need the GPS function that much. Instead, you could go with something such as a G-Shock or Pathfinder watch (from Casio), or a Suunto watch, or any other brand that does a similar job. Here’s a good place to educate yourself on the best G-Shock watch for your particular purpose.
To help make the buying experience of your own GPS watch easier there are various tips that need to be considered. Reading reviews of different types of watches will help make your own choice easier, since reviewers would have tried and tested the watch. Also understand just what is important to help reach your own goals and what features GPS watches have that can enable you to surpass your own expectations. Pick a watch that is suitable for yourself and your own sport or other usage, to ensure compatibility.
When choosing a GPS watch it is commonplace to get caught up in the different features and gadgets that they have to offer and sometimes it can be easy to miss one important factor, try on the watch before buying! If you are going to be wearing the GPS watch when doing strenuous tasks, it is imperative that you are comfortable and the screen is easy to read.

Fond of Hiking, but Is it Safe?

Are you planning a hiking trip with your family, friends, and/or spouse? Hiking can be a fun and exciting experience but it can also be dangerous. There are steps you can take to protect yourself.

An important consideration is your choice of hiking trail. You will want to make that decision as soon as you can. You will be able to familiarize yourself with where you will be hiking. It is important that you take into consideration the difficulty of the trail. There are trails for beginners as well as for advanced hikers.

Now that you have selected your hiking trail, you will want to familiarize yourself with it. Get a map of the area and study it carefully. You will want to know where, on the trail, you will be at all times. You also want to know how to get out of the area in case of an emergency. You may make notes on your map so it is wise to take it with you on your trip.

While researching the place where you will vacation, you want to ask questions about the security of the hiking trail. You will want to know what emergency procedures the campground or park has. You will want to know how to contact emergency personnel. You should take a cell phone along with you. This will allow you to call for help if you or someone in your party has an accident or wanders off the trail. If you do not own a hikercell phone, you may want to consider purchasing a prepaid one for this trip.

Hiking trips can be one or more days. Depending on the type of hiking trip you plan, you want to make sure you have enough food and drink. Some people like to campgrounds, pitch a tent, and take short hikes of two, four, or six hours and then return to their campsite. You have to research the various parks and public campgrounds to determine if your plans fit into what is being offered. When you leave on your hike, you want to make sure you have what you need to enjoy the hike as well as take care of any emergency.

An investment you may want to consider is a good pair of hiking boots. You should check the extended forecast before your trip so that you pack the appropriate clothing. If the forecast says it will be bright and sunny, you may want to bring along a light coat in case it rains or in case you become stranded on the hiking trail overnight. Have a look at the boot recommendations from Mountain Getaway.

You choice of a good backpack is also important. Keep in mind that it’s the one item that you’ll be carrying on your back for hours on end, and it’s important that it’s comfortable and safe to use. Check out Rangermades best hiking backpacks page for good info.

Always let your family and friends know where you are going. Let them know when you are leaving and when you will return. Give them the name of the campground or park and contact numbers. If you do not return on time, they will have an idea of where you should be. It is a good idea that after studying your map and determining where you plan to be on the trail each day, you should make notes. Leave them with your family and friends.

If you follow these tips, you will have safe trip. Hiking is fun and exciting but it can also be dangerous. Safety should always be a prime consideration.

Choosing the Right Bag for Your Laptop

5.11-backpackA laptop bag is a must-have accessory if your work is carried out on the field more than in the office. However, before placing an order for a laptop bag (or backpack), you should take into account several issues:

1. Choose the right size: don’t buy a laptop bag of 16-17 inches if you have a 10.1 inch netbook. And conversely, if you have a full-size portable, verify the dimensions of the bag’s compartments to be large enough to accommodate your laptop.

2. avoid ordering online before you can check the product live – when it comes to this category of accessories, the information provided on websites by sellers is quite poor.

3. make sure that the quality of the material from which the bag is manufactured is high grade and offers resistance (checks everything including zippers), but looks do matter – make sure it doesn’t look cheap.

4. Find bags with at least two compartments. If it has only one compartment, you will need to put your laptop and charger next to each other, and this way the laptop can get scratched easily. The right combination is two compartments + outer pocket for the charger or three compartments plus outside pocket. Why we recommend bags with compartments? Because, in some cases, in addition to the laptop you need to also carry files and documents.

5. If, however, you opt for a simple bag with one compartment, buy a laptop bag to protect it from scratches.

6. If you travel a lot on foot and on physically demanding roads, choose a laptop backpack instead of a bag. Have a look at this selection of good tough backpacks

7. Please note that the price is not a factor that guarantees the quality of the bag by itself. You can find inexpensive handbags for under 30 dollars.

These are just a few tips for those willing to buy a laptop bag. I am convinced, however, that among our readers there are laptop bag or backpack owners who can share their experience. So we look forward to your feedback: what you considered when you bought a laptop bag, how satisfied have you been following the purchase, what problems came along and so forth.

Update: I got myself the 5.11 1-day tactical backpack, the black version. Again, thanks to the Rangermade website. It’s very well crafted, from high quality tough material. It has 20-somethings pockets and a compartment where you can fit 2 laptops, not just one. The laptop stays firmly in place, even if it’s not attached with a band. There’s a band for 12 to 13 inch laptops. Even so the laptop does not move from its place. It will also fit other things in it and it’s not going to be heavy when you put it on your back. Maybe the first time, but you’ll get used. The first time I put it on my back it had 15 lbs. I had in it the laptop, charger, hard disk drive, mouse, a folder with 200 sheets and data cables. Even if at first glance these appear to be light, they add up. And yet, the backpack did well in the subway and the laptop was very well protected.

If you look it up on the Internet, you will find many positive reviews about this backpack.

Coding the Canon SDK to Control Your Canon Camera

Canon_EOS_G1X_III have a couple friends photographers who for various reasons wanted their own camera controlling programs to do various tasks. One example is in a book scanning project using cameras. Since Canon was one of the first camera manufacturers to release camera control software for end-users, and their SDK is also one of the most robust, it made sense to run the scanning project with Canons.

You need to apply with Canon to get the SDK dll’s. The required info and application links based on your location are available here: I applied, told my story nicely and was approved with no problem.

Once obtained, you plug the libraries into your .NET Studio and happily start coding away. Now, there’s a problem here, the documentation isn’t very complete, and the information available on the internet is rather sparse. I had to look hard and find the few available sources on this topic.

As for a camera to test my programming on, I used the newer Canon G1X mark 2 since the project sponsored it. To be honest I think it’s a great little camera, and it’s doing well for book scanning, so much so that the results with good lighting are very comparable to that of the DSLRs’. The review that helped me make an educated decision to buy the G1X mark II was – Little site but hands-on and very helpful.

There are three classes, the SDKHandler class, the Camera class and the CameraValues class, and from the Canon SDK there is the EDSDK class.

In the SDKHandler class are a few variables:

HTML5: content structuring

HTML-5-Logo-150x150In this post we want to go into the special tags that HTML5 offers for the structuring of the contents of a website.

The section element

General content areas of a document are represented by the section elements. According to the specification, there is a thematic grouping of content, typically opening with a heading. So they should be used when there are different topics on one site that can be summarized. So if you are considering whether you should distribute the content better in two different documents or leave it in one, the use of the section element is appropriate if you opt for the presentation in a single document.

Code Example

section was therefore intended for a rough thematic sub-division of a page into sections. This is precisely the meaning of the word “section”.

The article element

article elements represent self-contained sections of a document, similar to a newspaper article. It therefore makes sense to accommodate more structuring elements such as header or footer within article elements. A prominent example of such applications are weblogs. The article itself would be applied as an article element, the comments could also be structured in article elements. Therefore, the element got its name, it just indicates a journalistic matter, an article.

Code Example

Article as a child element of section

The comments, however, could be housed together in a section element, because they differ thematically from the article, they do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the author, and inded, can be completely opposite.

Code Example

As the examples show, it is not necessary to write article elements within section, because on every page, there could be different themes, mainly because web authors may be tempted to have their own custom pages for various thematic areas.

Also, the structure suggested here for a weblog can be seen only as one of several semantically correct proposals. Similarly, it would be possible to interpret the comments as an ordered and possibly nested list. For a page that contains a blog post, the following structure is suitable:

Code Example

div is better!

The section element could be replaced – without the page becoming unsemantic – by a div element, because the divs were invented just for this purpose: to group related content, that will receive no additional meaning solely by the grouping. Arguing that both blog posts and comments deal with the same subject, a div element would even be preferred to a section element, because section elements are not generic containers and therefore exclusively should be used to exclusively describe the structure of a page.

section as a child element of article

Someone who has an extensive article in mind, may now be rightly entitled to remark that in articles also there are typically thematic groupings of content with a header. In such cases, section elements are also the right choice:

Code Example

The aside element

In some textbooks the page layout is framed by differently wide margins. The wider of the two edges includes about one-fifth of the total width and thus makes a marginal column. “Marginal” also means “incidental”: what is more suitable to accommodate additional information, which although not irrelevant, has to do only marginally with the actual topic, but a side column? This can be tips, hints, alternative speech or writing or illustrative sketches. It was only logical that this design element found its way from the print medium to the Internet, especially when you consider that most people will look at websites in a horizontal format, even if their share is decreasing due to growing monitors.

Many websites nowadays have a multi-column layout, corresponding to the width of the output medium provided. A marginal column is represented by the aside element. The specification states that by analogy, the aside element encloses sections of a page, its content stands only in an indirect connection with the surrounding content. Thus, it is of course clear that aside elements do not necessarily have to stand in a side column, also name and origin of the name suggest this.

Although or because the content of an aside element is not directly related to the main content, the aside content should remain self-contained and understandable apart from the main content of the page.

Code Example

With the presented elements, the contents of a website can be structure semantically, but what are the benefits in doing so? As a visitor to a website, you will of course see nothing of the underlying code; today’s browsers display unsemantic HTML just as neatly; even erroneous source code is corrected. The semantics is therefore ostensibly catered to the search engines and this is exactly where you benefit as a user of semantically correctly implemented websites, because the search engines can recommend sites that match your search terms better. Semantics thus has an impact on the quality of results from search engines, and hopefully will help lower the frustration level of the visitors.
